Your breast massage guide to emotional and feminine well-being
And ancient breast cupping female figurines from Iran!
Hello October. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month and the wise witch in me is sharing caring tips for boobs…boobies…titties…tatas…breasts…the girls…those glorious love domes of our bosom! I’ve got the ultimate breast massage guide for you below.
But first, check out these ancient female figurines from ca. 1500–1100 B.C. Iran cupping their breasts! It’s wild to think on the same land where government prohibits women from baring their hair, these historical artifacts demonstrate a time in the region when baring breasts was celebrated!
If you’ve been following my stories on Insta these past weeks, you know I’ve been spreading awareness about the women’s rights movement and revolution happening in Iran right now.
Men, women, and even school girls are protesting courageously against misogyny and patriarchal oppression.
I’m inspired by their bravery and also deeply grieving all the women, men, and children that have been murdered in these protests for defending basic human rights.
I’m also loving this photo of sisters in solidarity with the Iranian people, baring their breasts in protest!
Breast Massage for Well-Being
When was the last time you showed your girls some love?
It’s easy to neglect our breasts. We keep them cooped up in constricting bras and soon forget (or were never taught) that self-pleasure is healing.
Many women only touch their own breasts in worry of breast cancer (understandably - one in eight women are diagnosed in their lifetime).
In a world where women around the world are still defending basic human rights of bodily autonomy, choosing to devotionally care for your breasts and experience them as a source of love, energy, and pleasure, is a sexy, sovereign choice.
A consistent breast massage practice is remarkable for the feminine spirit.
The breasts are a portal of deep nourishment, pleasure and healing, yet they are one of the most hyper-sexualized, objectified, and shamed areas of the body.
Breast massage is an essential health practice to have in your toolbox because it supports and heals breast tissue and prevents toxic build-up.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), breast massage is known to increase circulation and the healthy flow of blood and “qi”, or energy, throughout the body. This stimulation breaks up stagnation to keep the breasts healthy. In Western medicine, breast massage is acknowledged as helping lymphatic flow and drainage (which can prevent cysts and lumps from forming).
A daily breast massage practice will help you notice any changes within your breast tissue.
It also feels f*cking fantastic. When we allow ourselves this pleasure, breast massage can decrease stress and tension, melt away shame, and enhance your connection to your sensuality and feminine essence. The more you do it, the more sensitive you become. So take time to love up your breasts! Circle in and out your breasts with gentle massage and tend to your nipples with tickles.
“The breasts have the power to bring woman to the deepest of orgasmic experiences. The breasts are central to a woman’s experience of sexual ecstasy.”
—Diana Richardson, Tantric Orgasm for Women
Heart + Womb Healing
Many ancient healing arts regard a woman’s breasts as the physical manifestation of her heart center.
Because the breasts are a gateway to intimacy and pleasure for women, they also provide huge clues as to what emotions are present, being processed, or need processing. In this way, caring for our breasts is caring for our soul.
In Chinese Medicine, the heart is closely connected with the womb through the Bao Mai (Uterus Vessel). This connection is well documented and explains the profound mental-emotional link affecting the heart on the womb. Sadness over a long period of time is believed to cause a Heart-Yin deficiency, physically and energetically weakening the Uterus Vessel. A woman's fertility relies on a clear pathway of energy between her heart and her womb.
Marma Points for Breast Massage
Marma points have been treasured for centuries for their role serving an essential role in breast massage and feminine health.
These subtle energy pressure points in Ayurveda (India’s ancient holistic healing art) are similar to acupuncture points in Chinese Medicine and are targeted to help the body stay healthy and allow energy to flow more freely.
Repressed emotions such as anxiety, grief, stress, anger, frustration, guilt, or sadness can disrupt the flow of prana (life-giving force) near the heart chakra. Activating marma points during breast massage can help release emotions and blocked energy.
The Point: Stanya Mula
Location: On both sides of the breastbone, one angula away from the midline, at the level of the nipple. This point may be harder to find in lactating breasts due to heaviness; look for where the breast attaches to the chest close to the midline.
Physical Benefit: Relieves congestion, eases indigestion, promotes lymph circulation, eases tenderness from fibrocystic breast tissue, abscesses or cysts, regulates lactation and manages mastitis. It is also helpful in surgical births to eliminate waste products. The right side is related to the liver, and the left to the spleen.
Practice: Press and release the base of the breastbone, just a finger width on either side of the midline. Do this a handful of times.
The Point: Stanya Parshva
Location: On both sides straight down from the armpit, at the 7th rib, near the base of the breast attachment.
Physical Benefit: As with the other marma points, massaging these points relieves congestion, stimulates lymph circulation, eases tenderness, helps with lactation.
Practice: Use the tips of the index and middle fingers to gently press and release on the sides of the body one at a time just. Do this several times. It may tickle - let out a giggle!
The Point: Chuchuka
Location: Tip of the nipples
Benefit: Enhances circulation in the tiniest of capillaries, deeply cleansing the breast tissue.
Practice: Naked, sit and lean forward. Brush, stroke, and take a hold of your nipples and gently jiggle them up and down. If this makes you smile… great! Joy is great medicine.
Final tit touching tips
Use warm oil :) Opt for cold-pressed organic oils when possible and include a few drops of Rose (the Queen) essential oil to support emotional healing.
Coconut oil neutralizing, ideal for people who have sensitive skin or experience anger or irritability.
Sesame oil is a nice grounding and soothing choice for those who experience anxiety or racing thoughts.
Almond oil contains all sorts of natural goodness (vitamin E, vitamin A, essential fatty acids, proteins, potassium, and zin) and is a very mild, hypoallergenic oil, safe for almost all skin types.
The most important part of this self-care practice is to be present with your breasts and breathe deeply. As always, listen to your body. Don’t do anything that doesn’t feel good, and feel free to explore, modify and create a massage that feels delightful and delicious for you.
If emotions come up while you’re massaging your breasts (and it’s likely that they will), slow down, stay present, deepen your breath, and take the time to allow your emotions to flow. Remember, flowing energy is healthy energy. This applies to emotional energy as well as sexual energy.
I recommend practicing breast massage a few times a week, if not everyday. Try it in the morning before you get out of bed. It can be a wonderful way to connect to your body, open your heart, and allow your energy and emotions to flow before you start your day.
