Writing for healing
Like riding a bicycle for the first time, writing can be wobbly, even scary, but it soon becomes second nature and an economical option for getting from point A to B on your healing journey. Writing is a voyage of self-discovery. It’s a mode for mapping your interior landscape. In writing, one can find courage, vulnerability, and truth.
Expressing your thoughts and feelings on paper supports your mental and physical health. Regular writing builds confidence and cultivates awareness to become a more compassionate person towards yourself and others. Taking time for self-reflection and creative expression provides insight and direction.
Writing enables me to look forward and backward to understand my present self. There is something about reviewing your life and the direction you’re going, telling the whole truth, and growing more open instead of falling apart. In picking up the fragmented pieces of myself, I become whole and more valuable. Like Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramic with gold fillings.
Many moons ago, I discovered Julia Cameron’s foundational practice, Morning Pages: three pages of stream of consciousness written in longhand every morning before you do anything else. This clears my psyche and provides a fresh canvas to start the day. This practice has been a catalyst for my development as an artist and healer. I cannot recommend it enough.
My recommendations
The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity - A 12-week-long program of exercises and explorations that help loosen up one’s artistic self. This powerful book challenges one to move into an entirely different state of personal expression and growth with the foundational practice of Morning Pages.
Heal Yourself with Writing by Catherine Ann Jones - I took a writing workshop with Catherine at Esalen many years ago and was inspired by her endless wisdom and writing prompts. This book is a gem for self-guided exploration.
Unmute Yourself with Ann Randolph - Ann Randolph kicks off the morning with an invocation and meditation for you to drop in and start your day by connecting with the most important person in your life - you! This monthly class meets on Zoom, Monday through Friday at 8am PT for one hour. Next cohort begins January 4th. Use code UNMUTE for a $30 discount. See you there!
For Women Who Roar - A storytelling movement dedicated to helping women heal their stories through online and print publications, podcasts, events, and membership – featuring the voices, experiences, and art of women. This has been a welcoming platform for me to share my poetry on open mic night. If you’re interested in community and sharing your work, I recommend getting involved. Follow them on Instagram.
Body Narratives by Jennifer Lewis - In this five-week live online class, learn to write from a place of embodiment to release stories held within the body. Jennifer is a compassionate, dynamic teacher that will inspire and support you in unearthing your body narrative.
With so much love,
Christina
