Getting Covid while on retreat in Costa Rica is what I’d call ADVANCED YOGA TRAINING. For months I’d been looking forward to a week of moving meditation with my beloved yoga teacher, Shiva Rea. But when I tested positive a few days into the retreat, the real Yoga began.
I suddenly had a new understanding of how dogs must feel when they leave the vet with a cone around their neck. I distanced from all and wore a mask inside my own room, until inevitably, my partner got it too.
We made the most of it and once my symptoms subsided, I joined the group practice on the beach where all felt safe by the ocean's winds and my 10 yard distance. I followed instruction by sight but at times my ears strained to hear the wisdom teachings being shared.
It reminded me of the time I went to see the Dalai Lama. I was 19, it was my birthday, and I joined an amphitheater of thousands to hear his holiness speak. There was an issue with the mic and the sound was going in and out,
“The secret to living at peace with the universe is — — don’t forget it.”
“The great wisdom keepers know —“
“To find your destiny, you need — and — to remember”
It was a cosmic joke. All the answers you seek are already inside.
When a wrench is thrown in your plans, it’s easy to react with a pity party. Sure I was bummed to have Covid but I couldn’t count on anyone to make me feel better, in body or mind.
The only person responsible for my consciousness was me. Every challenge is a teacher.
And while that is true, it's also equally important to study with teachers who embody their teachings.
The student / teacher relationship is one of the oldest archetypes in our collective consciousness. To surrender to studentship is one of the sweetest relationships to experience.
There are so many basic, shallow spiritual teachings shared on the internet. I think it’s because we’ve lost respect for Teacher. People skip the initiation process and crown themselves teacher or guide.
But when you practice with someone who has studied deeply, the difference is palpable.
One can only guide as deep as they have gone themselves.
Grateful to all my teachers, past, present and future. 🙏🏼🌿🌹
With so much love,
Christina
